Port Codes

Port codes are unique, five-character alphanumeric identifiers assigned to locations used in international trade and transport, including seaports, airports, and inland destinations. These codes are primarily standardized by the UN/LOCODE (United Nations Code for Trade and Transport Locations) system to ensure seamless and accurate communication across the global supply chain, appearing on bills of lading and other official documentation.

Structure of Port Codes

A port code consists of five characters, following a standardized structure:

• First two letters:  Represent the country, based on the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country codes (e.g., US for the United States, CN for China).
• Last three characters:  Designate the specific port or terminal within that country (e.g., LAX for Los Angeles, NYC for New York). 

Key Functions

Port codes are vital for eliminating ambiguity, as many ports might have similar or identical names. They are used in: 

• Shipping Documentation:  Included in manifests, packing lists, and bills of lading to identify cargo origin and destination.
• Customs Declarations:  Essential for compliance and faster processing during customs clearance.
• Cargo Tracking and Booking:  Logistics platforms and freight forwarders use these codes to book shipments and monitor cargo movements globally.
