The revenue tonne (R/T) is a unit of measurement used in freight transport, representing the weight or volume of cargo used to calculate shipping service charges. The higher value between actual weight (in tonnes) and volume (in cubic metres) is taken as the revenue tonne.
Within the shipping industry, cargo is charged either by weight or by volume (W/M). Weight is measured in metric tonnes, while volume is measured in cubic metres (CBM).
Regardless of whether weight or volume calculation is employed, the billing method yielding the higher revenue is deemed the Rating Ton. This measurement standard effectively standardises pricing and billing procedures for cargo transportation by comprehensively considering both weight and volume factors.
